The Good Samaritan

A man and his wife are awakened at 3 o'clock in the morning by a loud pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain is asking for a push. "Not a chance," says the husband, "It is 3 o'clock in the morning!"
He slams the door and returns to bed. "Who was that?" asked his wife.
"Just some drunk guy asking for a push", he answers.
"Did you help him?" she asks.
"No, I did not, it is 3 o'clock in the morning and it is pouring out there!"
"Well, you have a short memory," says his wife. "Can't you remember about three months ago when we broke down and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself!"
The man does as he is told, gets dressed and goes out into the pounding rain.
He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there?"
"Yes" comes back the answer.
"Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband.
"Yes, please!" comes the reply from the dark.
"Where are you?" asks the husband.
"Over here on the swing!" replies the drunk.

Medicines Enduring Traditions

"The past is always with us, never to be escaped; it alone is enduring." William Osler

Holidays are a good time to reflect on the past and rekindle important traditions. As a child, our family went to Christmas Eve candlelight services, came home, sang Christmas carols around the tree, and read the Christmas Story from the Gospel of Luke. Afterwards, we opened gifts and then stayed up late enjoying a special dessert that my Mom always made. My wife's family practiced the more common tradition of opening gifts Christmas morning, after leaving Santa milk and cookies and hanging stockings on the fireplace.

Medicine is also rich with many traditions, one of which is caring for those who are less fortunate or unable to pay for their care. This altruism or unselfish concern for the welfare of others is what motivates many to choose our profession. Most would agree that a certain amount of altruism is an intrinsic part of the art of medicine. I am not sure, though, that such altruism always comes naturally. I remember, as a kid, getting ten dollars to help buy Christmas gifts for my siblings; I spent most of it on a new baseball glove for myself that I just had to have. Later, I felt especially guilty because my mom told me they were planning on getting me a new glove for Christmas.

It has been said of physicians that we start out wanting to do good, and end up wanting to do well. Lets hope this holiday season, that rich tradition of wanting to do good for others, is renewed in each of us.

John J. Mohr, M.D.
